PRIVATE LESSONS WITH Dr. James Barger

 Why Study Privately?

Private saxophone lessons are the most effective way to accelerate progress, refine technique, and develop musical artistry. My teaching is highly individualized, where each lesson is shaped around the student’s strengths, challenges, and goals. Whether you're preparing for all-state auditions, college entrance, or simply growing your passion, private study allows for the kind of focused attention that produces real transformation.

"[Dr. Barger] is passionate, smart, kind, inspiring, and very encouraging. He makes me want to be better and work harder."

what is covered in lessons?

  • Breath control for stamina and phrasing
  • Tone production and sound development
  • Intonation and tuning tendencies
  • Technical fluency and rhythmic precision
  • Sight-reading and musical interpretation
  • Reed care and equipment maintenance
  • Repertoire exploration and performance preparation
  • Applied music theory and historical context

Private study gives students the freedom to explore beyond the limitations of an ensemble class. Together, we build musicianship through experimentation, discovery, and shared curiosity.

developing versatile, independent musicians

Saxophonists today need to be agile, expressive, and well-rounded. I’m passionate about helping students grow into confident musicians equipped for whatever path they pursue, whether it’s college auditions, professional performance, or teaching careers. Through a balance of structure and creativity, students learn to:
  • Perform a broad range of styles, from Baroque to contemporary
  • Embrace improvisation and creative risk-taking
  • Sight-read fluently and accurately
  • Double on other woodwinds when appropriate
  • Listen critically and apply theory in real time

Above all, I want students to feel empowered. Success on the saxophone comes from hard work, smart practice, and a sense of play. My studio is a space where high standards and encouragement go hand-in-hand.

"I have never felt so supported in lessons before. [Dr. Barger] believes in me even when I don't believe in myself."
